A chat about building a resilient mesh network

This post is migrated from the old Wordpress blog. Some things may be broken.

I always enjoy a chat about a meshnet: a sort of hyper-local communications network for when shit hits fans, or for people who are just super nerdy hobbyists and like to think about shit hitting fans. In the above embedded podcast (Spotify, soz) our guy who goes by the handle @hydroponictrash talks with Robert Evens about “building autonomous, off-grid, encrypted, and solar powered communications infrastructure,” which he also blogged about (Substack, soz). What’s interesting here is the focus on solar power for the infrastructure and the use of meshtastic for ease and encryption.

For me, the issue with meshnets is less about the technology and more about the preparation and foresight. People start too late: after the shutdown has started or the infrastructure has failed. Circumvention techniques need to be thought of and tried and tested in advance of the event. Before we can have technical solutions, we need the human ones: the communities.
